What are mussels?

Mussels are small, bivalve mollusks commonly found in both saltwater and freshwater environments around the world. They have dark, oblong shells—typically bluish-black or brown—and soft, flavorful meat inside. Mussels attach themselves to rocks, docks, or other surfaces using strong thread-like structures called byssal threads.

‍

While there are many species of mussels, the ones typically found in tins are blue mussels or green-lipped mussels. These varieties are prized for their tender texture and rich, briny flavor. Tinned mussels are usually steamed, then packed in flavorful liquids like olive oil, escabeche, or spicy sauces.

‍

And like other tinned seafood, mussels are highly nutritious. They're rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, iron, and vitamin B12—making them excellent for heart health, brain function, and overall energy. Mussels are also considered a sustainable seafood option, as they require minimal feed and help filter and clean ocean water.
